Vršic, Mountain Pass Slovenia

Vršic, Mountain Pass

Picture: T. Kotnik

The highest mountain pass of Slovenia is the Vršic, leading from Kranjska Gora to the Trenta Valley. On 10 km, numerous serpentines lead uphill for 800 m difference in altitude to 1,610 m. Switchbacks are plastered and reach upto 15% slope. On the top of the pass it is sensitivly cold. Behind the pass you catch sight of the densely wooded Trenta Valley, with the wild River Soca, thundering down the valley.

You’re running on best asphaltic surface into the dense forest of the rustic Soca Valley, as if entering a different world. That is sparsely populated with just a few old and rustic farms, but always in sight of the wild Soca and its crystal clear water, gourgeously shimmering in the rocky riverbed, changing colours from turquoise to aquamarine and over to crystal clear. Within the Soca Valley you will catch sight of unnumbered rope and plank bridges, allowing farmers to reach their isolated homesteads.
