Vintgar Gorge

- Picture: J. Skok
The gorge of Vintagr stretches on 1.6 km lenght between the vertical walls of Mount Hom and Mount Boršt, nicely decorated by the River Radovna with several waterfalls, potholes and rapids. Due to its amenity, this attractive ravine is of great importance for tourism in Slovenia. Coming from Bled, we betake ourselves northwards, heading for the village of Podhom. We follow the guideposts to Vintgar. The small road leads directly to the entrance of the gorge (3.5 km off Bled) - this place has been arranged for visitations since 1893.
Walkways, galleries and bridges are set up through this narrow ravine, echoing the drone of the unleashed River Radovna. The Radovna streams over leaps, rushes past rapids and comes to a short rest at the clear, deep spots. Vintgar ends at a scenic waterfall called Šum, which is infact the largest river cataract of Slovenia. We leave the Radovna behind at the waterfall and ascend a path on the southeast to the small Church St. Katarinen above Zasip. From here you have most remarquable panoramic sights on the Karawanken, Bled and its surroundings and Mount Triglav.
