Velika Planina, Alps Slovenia

Velika Planina, Alps

Picture: Bobo

Velika planina is a high plateau of the Kamnik-Savinj Alps. On the alp you’ll find the best preserved settlement of herdsmen in Slovenia. The scenery is jagged by karst basins and sinkholes. Tradition of pasture management and cheese production are still lively on the alp, especially worth mentioning is the Trnic, a pear-formed dry cheese. The alp-shacks, also called Bajte, are clustered all over the alp (the oldest ones have an oval layout). The cattle is out at feed from June to Septembre. On the brinks of a herdsmen colony, right opposite of the Church Mary Snow, there is the only large chalet preserved in Slovenia. The Preskar Lodge is visible even from great distance, a clapboard house without windows and chimney. Ancient customs are shown here.
