The Castle of Ljubljana

The main object of interest in Ljubljana is the castle surmounting the city. Archeological excavations have shown that the castle hill has already been fortified at the times of Celts and Illyrians, being a roman fortification in those days. The start of construction for the medieval castle must be located in the 9th century; the castle grounds are mentioned for the first time in 1144. At this time, it was already the seat of the Spanheim sovereigns, who coined their money there. Today’s appearance was achieved after the earthquake of 1511 and at the start of the 17th century. The country’s leaders inhabited the castle still in the early 17th century; though later it was used as a military facility and state prison.
Renovation of the castle is now almost finished and there’s a pleasurable café offering refreshments. The two wedding halls, the look-out tower and the castle’s chapel are opened for visitations, while the rest of the historical site is used for performances, exhibitions and social functions.
Close to the castle grounds there is a monument for the Slovenian peasant uprising (Stojan Batic, 1974).
