At a distance of 20 km from Lipica, in the northern part of the plane karst plateau at the foot  of the hill lies the village of Štanjel (St. Daniel), which is one of the oldest and loveliest settlements. Its singular character is determined by the renaissance and baroque castle and the St. Daniel Church of late gothic. The castle is a most significant building of medieval times at the coastline (Primorska). Having been heavily destructed in WW II, the village is still being restored. One of the renovated bulding bears the art collection of the painter and graphic artist Lojze Spacal.
