Soca Valley Slovenia

Soča Valley

Following the stream from its spring to its mouth, the valley of the Soča offers multiple significant natural monuments. The origin of the Soča (at 1,050 m) is perhaps the most beautiful source of the Alps (with a controlled access). A bit downstream there’s Mlinarica, a wild gorge, which is up to 70-80 m deep, with a secured access only to its mouth and the first waterfall. Then there are those ravines that were chiselled by the white water s stream, the most remarkable ones are shortly before and after the village of Soča in the Trenta Valley (accessible from the street).

The Boka Waterfall is the next highlight: with a height of 144 m and a width of 18 m it is the highest waterfall of Slovenia. In two steps over 100 cubic metres of water are rushing downwards every second. The waterfall is located southwestern of Zaga, close to Bovec. Nearby is a hiking trail with a most impressive panorama. The gorges of Tolminka mark the lowest point of the Triglav National Park at 180 m. Those are the longest and deepest ravines of whole Slovenia. The point of contact of the valleys of Tolminka and Zadlaščica and their river beds is a one-off appearance.

The Tolminka Gorge is is about 200 m long and only 5 to 10 m wide. A rarity is the thermal spring (22° C) on the bank of Tolminka close to the end of the way following the ravine. The famous Devil’s Bridge (Hudicev most) stretches at 60 m above the Tolminka on the way between Zatolmin and Cadrg. Underneath the bridge is a cavern called the Dante or Zadlaška Grotto. In the narrow part of the Zadlažčica Gorge there is a threesided rock trapped, shaped like a head of a bear and therefore called ‘bear head’.
