Snežnik, Castle Slovenia

Snežnik, Castle

Picture: A. Fevžer

The castle of Snežnik at the banks of the wilderness at the foot of the high plateau of Snežnižka planota has been the last refuge for wanderers, when predators and bandits, vagabonds and Turks were haunting the forests of the Innerkrain.

The fortified castle an grown rock is encircled by a moat; although it was rearranged for a couple of times, the rennaissance character has been widely preserved. Was it the remote lay or the favour of destiny, that the castle has survived the changes of time including two wars undamaged and still preserved its complete interior of the 18th and 19th century: furniture, precious tableware, old tableaus, artfully crafted wall coverings, books and smaller objects. Thus the castle, presently used as museum provides the right atmosphere to the visitor. There’s a lovely wedding hall that is favoured for concerts and readings as well. Occasionall exhibition take place in the picturesque arches of the basement.
