The park Škocjanske jame lies in the southwest of Slovenia in the Karst region of ‘Kras’. It is well known for its extensive cave systems and show caverns, as these were eroded by the waters of centuries. The cavern of Škocjan, which is named after the nearby village, is the most impressing cave of this region with a subterranean canyon of 150 m depth. Facing this exceptional underground world, you will inevitably experience an unbelievable amazement. Thus you can admire the beauties of the Karst landscape as well above and below the ground.
The grottos of Škocjan of five kilometres length were washed out by River Reka, submerging here just to reappear as River Timava 40 km further, streaming into the Bay of Triest at Duino. The cavernous premises of Škocjan reach a height of 90 m from the floor to the ceiling. The French Speleologist Casteret described this to be unparalleled in the world; 1986 the caves were set on the UNESCO list of natural and cultural assets.
