Piran, Seafaring Museum

The first collection of this kind in Piran was exhibited in the city meseum in 1954, later renamed as Seafaring Museum “Sergej Macera”. The museum is located in the classicist Palace Gabrielli at the harbour. Since its foundation, the institution is dealing with the history of seafaring of the coastal region and industrial branches related to the sea.
On show is an archeological collection of prehistoric and medieval sea routes and trade; another collection showes relics of settlements at the seaside and ion the mainland. The ethnological division demonstrates the production of salt with photos and models, tools and items of the daily life of the salt workers. On top of that there are unnumbered ship models, galleys and sailing ships, ship instruments, uniforms, ship equipment, photos and manieristic pieces of art to be admired.
