Ljubljana: Roman City Wall

The south western part of the city wall of the antique Emona is still preserved. The headstone is said to be laid in the year 14 B.C. by Emperor Augustus himself. Nearby is Jakopic Garden, where mural rests of two roman villas have been excavated – perhaps these villas housed those citizens of Emona, with whom Saint Hieronymus has exchanged letters. There is an archeological site at Erjavceva Street, were you can see an excavation “in situ”: an old Christian center of the 5th century with baptistery, portico and bischop’s palace. Colourful floor mosaics are indicating the donor names and confirming the city had its own archdeacon.
