Karster Wine Route Slovenia

Karst Wine Route

Red earth, the choppy biting Bora and the warm Jugo of the Mediterranean are ruling in this rocky vastness, stretching from the border of Vipava Valley to the Bay of Triest. A limestone plateau interspersed with karst grottos and gorges, formed by the waters of the River Reka.   Forests of yarrows and juniper, sweat herbs and grasses and wind-bent pines protect the karst dolines and uvalas filled with “Terra Rosa”.

Winegrowers cart this peculiar red earth to their vineyards, being agreat soil for the grape Refosco producing the famous Karst Teran. Even old greecs and romans enjoyed this lovely vine for its dark red cherry colour, its moderate alcoholic content and its pleasant effects on health and well being. The densly aromatic wine fits well with dark meat and game, perfectly complementing the equally valued Karst Prosciutto.

From April to Novembre, the Karst wine route is decorated with “frasks”, ivy loppings that lead the way to the villages that opened their Buschenschank. This special kind of sale of open wines of provenience has been installed already at times of Empress Maria Theresia. Yet it wouldn’t be complete without the tasting of Karst specialties in the cover of the old stone buildings. Visitors are welcomed not only in Buschenschanks, but also at the culinaric festivals in spring and autumn, at village festivities, at the pilgrimage in Komen and Vremski Britof, at the jump into River Reka, at the Prosciutto and Teran Festival in august in Dutovlje and at the poetry evenings in Vilenica.
