Since you can reach nature afoot from any point in Slovenia, it’s no wonder to find so many hiking trails for the occasional walkers as well as for the demanding hiking experts. There are topical routes and nature trails, hiking trails passing countryside parks, circular routes rounding cities or lakes, less difficult trails on the river banks, through forests and over alps and the most favoured Slovenian mountain hiking trails.

Many hikers are found on the European Hiking Routes E6 and E7, its Slovenian parts are stretching to 600 km. All in all the mountains of Slovenia offer more than 7,000 km of marked trails with 165 shacks, shelter and bivouacs. The mountainside of Slovenia provides targets for all challenge levels; in addition, experienced mountain guides can be accompanied. Mountain hikers love to discover the Slovenian transverse by stages from Maribor over the mounitains to the Adriatic. This mountain world is part of the huge Alps transverse called the Via Alpina, linking 8 countries of the Alps. A lot of the hiking trails are crossing the Slovenian frontiers, and therefore particularly indicated as hiking border posts. Slovenia is organizing mass walks like the “Embrace Your City!”, which takes place every spring since 1957 on a circular route round Ljubljana, attracting uncountable hikers.

The traditional walk on the Levstik trail “From Litija to Catež” bringing to life the literary travel journals of the author Fran Levstik. On top of that there are the walks on New Years Eve and organized night tours with torchlights.   The hiking trails of the valley and the low mountain range are attracting during all year, while the hiking trails of the mountains are only suitable from April to Octobre – most of the mountain cabins are open during that time.
