Visitors of Slovenia enjoy unnumbered cultural, ethnographical, gastronomical and sporting events plus trade shows all over the year. Internationally reputed events mostly take place in Ljubljana and Maribor, becoming important European festival grounds. But even in the smallest villages you will find countless other events.

Most important amongst the cultural events are the world-wide known International Biannual of Graphics with a tradition of over half a century, the international Summer Festival at Ljubljana with lots of leading figures of the classical music scene, the International Jazz Festival at Ljubljana, the Druga Godba, the multi-cultural festival of Lent at Maribor, the international festival of ancient classical music, the artisticly orientated Film Festival LIFFE and many other festivals of theatre, dance, music and alternative art. Particularly in summertime, cultural entertainment seems to be present at every spot of Slovenia – whole townscapes are dominated by medieval traditions brought back into life.

Also significant international sporting events take place in Slovenia, hosting alpine ski-runs for ladies and gentlemen at Kranjska Gora and on Mount Pohorje, ski jumps at Planica and

biathlon championships on the Pokljuka. Furthermore Slovenia is host of international cycle races, soccer and handball matches and scores of other tournaments.

Ethnographical events illustrate authentic national customs; most quaint highlights are the Carnival at Ptuj, Cerknica and other cities, with original Slovenian carnival masks. Events in many villages are related to their traditional handicraft.
