The castle of Ottosec sits on an island amidst the River Krka, where the course of the river is shallow, entangling islets and swell of tuff. Historic sources firstly mention the castle back in 1252. At first it was property of Count Vižnjegorski, later it changed possession from Count Andechs and the Babenberger. After 1246 it belonged to King Ottokar, who donated the castle the church of Freising, serving their ministration. In the first half of the 16th century it was in the hands of the Villander, selling the castle to Ivan Baron Lenkovic, the General of the present-day Croatian region Vojna krajina. Again it had alterning possessors, last of them were the Counts Margheri di Commandona, owning the castle until WW II.
The castle building was finished at the times of the Baroque; smaller renovations have followed in the second half of the 19th century. Nowaday’s shape of the castle is framed by a wall with four round defence towers and a fifth interior tower over the entrance to the inner courtyard. The palace of the castle is attached to the castle walls, one or two wings protruding to the courtyard. The castle’s chapel was initially located in the court wing but was later established in the western defence tower. Burnt down by partisans in 1942, it was lastly restored after the war, rearranged as a Hotel.
The charm of the centuries surprises with its natural and peaceful beauty of the castle’s environment, setup in the embracement of the River Krka, providing the most picturesque views of Slovenia.
