The castle of Gewerkenegg is throwning above the old town of Idrija still named after its historical identifier Gewerkenegg Mine Castle. Thus because right from the beginning in the 16th century it served as seat of administration and storage for the mercury mine, the second largest of the world in those days.
The original renaissance installation has been refurbished in a baroque style in the middle of 18th century; the arboured inner court was constructed at that time. The building with its painted inner facades has completely been restored and is beaming in best conditions. The main exhibition grants insights in half a millennium of mercury mining and the city of Idrija.
